Muslim fast food restaurant opens in France 8/3/2005 9:20:00 AM GMT Source: BBC Halal meals are now available for French Muslims in an American-_style_ fast-food restaurant after the opening of BKM, or Beurger King Muslim. BKM opened in the northern Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, where many residents are first or second generation Muslims from former French colonies. Beur is slang for a second generation North African living in France. BKM provides local Muslims with specialties such as Bakon Halal and Double Koull Cheese, all prepared in accordance to Islamic requirements. Project manager Mourad Benhamid said that 28 people had been hired by BKM in an area where one in four people of working age are unemployed. He said that most BKM's employees believe that the restaurant had ended a long period of unemployment . One worker, Hakim, said that young people in these suburbs have trouble finding work and this restaurant will allow the hiring of young people who have no diplomas or are looking for apartments . BKM has only one branch so far. Inside, the décor is colourful, with boxed menus and a play area at the back. This place can be a meeting place for youth, and that's good, customer Leila Bekhti said. Benhamid echoed this feeling by saying: this restaurant is open to everyone .
