C. Willett & Phyllis Cunnington, in THE HISTORY OF UNDERCLOTHES (1951), are silent about the side of the garments fasteners appear on. The illustrations, however, show a woman's skirt fastening left over right in 1600 and several nightgowns fastening left over right till as late as 1880 or so. The hooks on a corset from 1886 are right over left, as is an under-bodice from 1876. An illustration from The Tailor and Cutter, 1889, shows a man's shirt closing right over left, with his vest closing left over right, while the woman's shirt closes left over right and HER vest closes right over left! Is standard fastening a twentieth-century convention? Is standard an illusion? (cf. Ralph Lauren and Polo's unisex fastening left over right.)

The answer I always heard was that men dressed themselves but that women were dressed by others when they became adults. However, there are problems with that as, among other things, it suggests that men were dressing the women and that women's buttons were arranged for the convenience of men. Another alternative, I suppose, is that the buttons were arranged for the convenience of men in undressing the women. Bob Bode Tennesse Tech University
