If anyone reading this lives in the San Francisco area, you have to go by the S. F. Opera House and go to the front entrance hall and look up.... rosettes 6 to 8ft. in diameter (I estimate) are being gilt in composition gold via the water _base_d size. Rumor has it that the company doing the job are out of towners again. Now, I am a supporter of employing tradesmen in our own community and agree with other people in other states who _object_ to hiring out jobs to companies from out of town. I just hope that they use a strong sealant to protect against the comp. leaf from turning to a dull brown in 6 months... I wonder if the mayors office knows what will eventually happen to the brief beautiful appearance of those rosettes. I don't think that they were fully aware of the long run effect for saving a few bucks when it came to discussing the bids on that job. However, the job is being done and I am sure it will look beautiful. I wish I knew about the job..... I could sure use the work!

The SF Opera is the most overly endowed art organization in SF. The Opera sucks money out of programs for other arts, its a classic Big Art vs. little art situation. Any money that might be saved by letting San Francisco's opera house crumble into ruin ( the restoration project encompassed the whole building, not just the lobby, and the regilding was a necessary last step) would hardly be spent on funding another arts organization, it would be spent on another City building of less beauty. Why must art organizations squabble over crumbs? Why can't we have opera, which is inherently expensive, but is certainly not over-funded, and other art activities too? Why not complain about the massive amounts of money that are actively being wasted in non-art-related ways, like the 50 to 100 million dollars the US Forest Service lost last year (after deducting what they got for the lumber) subsidizing the rape of our woodlands?
