Sugar in the diet. Here is the problem. Everything you eat that is converted to energy is converted to glucose. Makes little difference what you eat - ham, bread, coca cola, lolly pop - eventually it becomes glucose. No exceptions. Simple sugars are digested too quickly causing a rapid rise in blood sugar. The pancreas tries to compensate for this by sending insulin into the blood stream. Eventually the pancreas becomes overworked along with the other endocrine glands that are involved such as the adrenals and the liver. Then the blood sugar regulation system goes out of whack and you wind up with hypoglycemia or diabetes. It is best to eat unrefined sugars and starches as they are digested more slowly because they consist of long chained molecules as opposed to refined sugars and starches which consist of short chained molecules. The body was designed to digest these things slowly not rapidly. Juices while juices can be a healthful addition to the diet, sweet juices may also cause a rapid rise in blood sugar thereby creating the same syndrome. While this may not be a textbook explanation, it is the way I have understood it over the years. The dietary factors are very important contributors to one's overall health. I am sure Dr Grossan will agree, our med schools in this country are notoriously lacking in teaching on these issues. Same with vitamins, added nutrients, etc. Those who are carbohydrate insensitive certainly know what you are saying to be true. If one is carbohydrate _in_sensitive, then eating carbs, simple or complex, will have no effect on one's well being.
