The question I have now is, why didn't the Vulcans do something more calculated to make the new race come out more like their own? Didn't they like the way they came out? It seems that parents of teenagers often want them to follow in their own footsteps. Are Vulcans immune to this? How do we know that this isn't in fact what they did? Are ST's Terrans as much like Vulcans as they can be given that they are Terrans? Actually, I don't think so, and I don't think that's what Vulcans did or tried to do. It's not so much that they are immune to what you speak of, but that Surak provides them a vaccine called IDIC.

some bright guy figures out how warp drive works, and humanity gets its first contact with Vulcan. 100 years after that, the Federation is founded. Let's consider some context. Vulcan has been a spacefaring civilization for a long time . Vulcans know the neighborhood, and the various other spacefaring civilizations: Klingon, Cardassian, Bajoran, Romulan, etc etc. Here, in this first contact with Humans, they discover a world just coming together after a world war. A very evident military capability. Let's suppose that Vulcan decided to bend a twig, to shape the tree. I also suspect that this is essentially what happened, but I think the decision wasn't made until later. Partly this has to do with the way Terrans are presented as something special among the galaxy's peoples, which in turn has to do with ST's function as an extension of American mythology outward in space and time. Vulcans were familiar with at least a handful of other advanced civilizations by the time they made contact with Terrans. But there are persistent hints that Vulcans somehow have always found Terrans particularly... fascinating. The special relationships between Spock and each significant member of TOS Enterprise's crew (all Terrans) and between Sarek and Amanda can be taken as emblematic of something broad and deep between Vulcan and Terra. My speculation has been that this was something present from the very beginning. Vulcans perceived in Terrans something that careful viewers of DS9 may understand if I refer to as Rootbeer of the Spirit. Some Vulcans despised or feared it, as many later people outside the Federation do; others saw in it the potential for IDIC on a scale beyond anything previously imagined; but all were fascinated. More significantly, Vulcans seem to have been unfamiliar with Romulans (or at least ignorant of their long ago familiarity) until well into the ST era. It is possible that they had no certain knowledge of Romulans' existence until a relatively short time before TOS opens. The significance comes from the fact that their first certain knowledge of the existence of Romulans may have been acquired during a conflict nearly always referred to as the Romulan-Earth Wars. That name implies that the conflict involved the Romulan Star Empire on one side, and Earth and ITS colonies on the other

Earth's then contacting some other world. Believe it or not, I wrote out that sentence at least 3 times before I left it in the above form. Looking at it now, it's no closer to clearly what I meant than the first version was. I was indeed attempting to refer to the first time Terrans initiated contact with some other world in what was THAT world's first exposure to another (planet's) civilization. I believe Picard made reference to the event in the superb TNG episode depicting a covert and ultimately abortive first contact operation (whose _title_ I've forgotten), but without mentioning the name of the people in question. I cannot mentally locate the justification for understanding him to have been referring to contact with the Klingons

Vulcan contacted Earth in the movie. Saul's comment is regarding Earth's then contacting some other world. Digging back into the Encyclopedia timeline, we have: 2063 Vulcan contacts Earth 2156 the Romulan wars, treaty agreement in 2160 2161 founding of the Federation 2218 Federation encounters the Klingons So, the Romulans were contacted before the Klingons. But as to which of the Federation founding (or not) worlds that had Earth as their first contact, is something that seems open to speculation.

It seems that the formation of the federation was hot on the heels of the resolution of the wars. Perhaps those in the alpha quadrant merely wanted to fortify their fences against possible future invaders?
