How long did people used to keep clothing?  Benjamin Franklin talks about his old blue coat in his autobiography, written when he was 40.  Thirty or forty years later, an old blue coat was his trademark according to all sorts of other people.  Did people keep clothing for that long, or was this something highly eccentric?

I have read that there were some articles of clothing, such as a suit or an overcoat, made of such heavy material that it was possible to keep them for decades.  You didn't have to go back to Franklin's time for that; I'm referring to expensive and/or custom made clothing in the first half of the 20th century.  For example, a Harris tweed coat could easily last 40 years. You probably couldn't do that very well with the stuff that's made today. Today's clothing is not sturdy enough, and a single article usually gets worn too much to make it last a long time.  In fact, I have observed on a lot of people that clothing that used to be called wash-and-wear is now just wear-and-wear without the washing.  It's what my junior high gym teacher used to refer to as thirty day shirts , except today it's the pants and jacket as well. Whatchoo mean, used to keep ?  In my closet right now are a ski jacket I bought in 1977, a Kansas City Royals jacket (1984), and a Philadelphia Phillies jacket (1983).  And that's the newer stuff. There's also a sheepskin coat purchased in 1973 and an Alpine-_style_ fedora from Italy that I bought in 1964. None of that matches Ben Franklin's blue coat, but I'm working on it. Now that you've given me a goal, it's a safe bet I'll achieve it. Larry Palletti              East Point/Atlanta, Georgia http://www.palletti.com     http://www.booksonscreen.com

Whatchoo mean, used to keep ? <snip nice list of kept clothing I have a wool swing coat my mother bought in the 40's to take to college, and it's come back into _style_ a couple of times since then.  I did have to update the buttons, but the coat itself is in excellent shape, and I have worn several winter seasons, including last winter. Not the same thing as wearing it every day for 40 years, granted, but still a wonderful coat that I'll keep and continue to wear. kay w Address munged.  AOL isn't necessarily coma tose, evidence to the contrary not withstanding.

My dinner jacket dates from December 1951.  It has been in and out of fashion several times over the years.

People 150-200 years ago would have been appalled at the quality and disposability of our clothing.  Even cast-off out-of-_style_ clothing of the wealthy wasn't disposed of once it became unfashionable.  It was usually passed down to servants.  They would wear the garments until cuffs and hems started to unravel.  Even then, the clothes would often be cut down and taken in for wear by the servants' children.  Sometimes, ragged-out garments were taken to the church for distribution to the poor. Until the time of the Industrial Revolution in England and, later, in America, textiles were a precious resource.  They required a lot of raw material harvested by manual labor, a lot of raw materials processing (carding, spinning, etc.), and weaving was a tedious and time-consuming process.  Cloth was just not something one threw away, unless it was completely unusable.
